The Pere Marquette Memorial Cross is dedicated to Father Jacques Marquette, an important figure in exploration and missionary work in the Great Lakes region. The first memorial was a small wooden cross erected at the site of Marquette’s death in 1675, marking the beginning of a series of memorials on the Buttersville peninsula. Throughout the 1800s, makeshift crosses and boulders purported to mark the location of Marquette’s death were reported by residents.
In 1921, the Daughters of the American Revolution placed a plaque at the site, followed by efforts from Marquette University to establish a formal memorial in 1926-27, though this plan did not come to fruition. Over the years, various crosses and memorials were erected and replaced, with the Ludington Daily News documenting these events. In 1938, the Ludington Daily News informed its readers that “A huge new cross, constructed of rough-hewn pines and extending 40 feet above the ground, was erected at the Fr. Marquette death site in Buttersville … and will remain until a permanent stainless steel memorial cross is erected, probably next year.” Finally, in 1955, a more permanent memorial was constructed through efforts led by local figures and labor unions, culminating in a dedication ceremony.
Michigan Historical Commission formally recognized the site in 1966 with a state historical plaque. In 2018, the Pere Marquette Memorial Association (PMMA) embarked on a project to renovate the memorial, focusing on rebuilding the base and refurbishing the 1955 cross. Through these efforts, the cross was revitalized and is now maintained by PMMA and the Mason County Historical Society.
