The

Mason County Historical Society

The Mason County Historical Society greatly appreciates the generous support of our community. Thanks to the support of our sponsors we have created Historic White Pine Village, the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum, and the Mason County Research Center where our visitors can spend time together making memories all while experiencing a bygone era.

Since 1937, the Society has endeavored to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation for local history. We could not meet the mission of the society without the generous support of our sponsors. Their support provides us the ability to fulfill the mission that we are committed to and honored to do. So please help us to express our heartfelt thanks by supporting our Corporate Sponsors.

Mason County Historical Society is excited to announce that we have received a generous $4,000 grant from the Great Lakes Energy People Fund. This funding will play a crucial role in our ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate the rich history of Mason County and its communities as we approach the 50th anniversary of Historic White Pine Village in 2026.

Thanks to members of Great Lakes Energy, the Phoenix Fire Barn will receive a new steel roof in June of this year, launching the beginning phase of Historic White Pine Village’s 50th anniversary preparations for July of 2026.

The Phoenix Fire Barn is a vital piece of our local history, symbolizing the bravery and resilience of our firefighters, particularly during the historic Ludington Fire of June 11th, 1881. To honor this legacy and propel Historic White Pine Village into the next 50 years, we are committed to enhancing the Fire Barn’s exhibits and infrastructure. Our plans include external repairs, establishing new exhibit standards, improving lighting, and creating engaging exhibits and historical narratives with the assistance of Lafferty van Heest and Associates.

Mason County Historical Society has received a $5,500 grant to fund the painting of the Pere Marquette Townhall. Members of the Great Lakes Energy support the People Fund by voluntarily rounding up their bills to the next highest dollar. The rounded up amount is distributed to non-profit organizations and charitable activities that benefit people in the communities served by the cooperative. MCHS encourages our supporters to who are Great Lake Energy members to take part in the People Fund.

Mason County Historical Society was awarded $800 to help fund our Pioneer & Maritime Children’s Day Camps from the Ludington Walmart.

The Mason County Historical Society greatly appreciates the support we have received through the Michigan Humanities H.O.P.E Grant, for $7,500. Funding for these grants has been provided by Michigan Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act economic stabilization plan.
