Abe Nelson Lumbering Museum

Explore Michigan’s legendary lumber, see authentic logging tools and artifacts, and learn how the timber industry transformed Mason County and the entire Great Lakes region.

In the second half of the 19th century, white pine was king, makingMason County one of its most productive kingdoms. The Abe Nelson Lumbering Museum brings this defining era to life through the personal story and craftsmanship of a man who lived it. Abe Nelson worked in the lumber camps as a young boy before becoming a skilled blacksmith, shaping tools and equipment essential to the trade. The items throughout this museum come from his own shop and experiences, offering an authentic look at the tools, ingenuity, and daily work that supported Michigan’s lumber industry.

Housed in a building inspired by the look and feel of a lumber camp, the museum reflects the rugged environment where thousands of men once lived and labored. From the earliest mills along Pere Marquette Lake to the height of the lumber boom, this exhibit shares the story of an industry that transformed Mason County—told through the hands-on work and legacy of one of its own.
