Beckoning Beacons
Discover how lighthouses guided ships safely along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
Before GPS and electronic navigation, a lighthouse’s beam was the difference between life and death on Lake Michigan. The Beckoning Beacons exhibit traces the fascinating evolution of lighthouse optics — from the earliest oil lamps to the precision-engineered Fresnel lenses that transformed Great Lakes navigation.
Named for French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel, whose lens design revolutionized lighthouse technology in the 19th century, these intricate glass assemblies concentrated and amplified light in ways that were nothing short of miraculous for their time.
The exhibit includes examples of the lens technology that guided vessels in and out of Ludington’s harbor for over a century. For anyone captivated by the romance of lighthouses — or simply by the ingenuity of 19th-century engineering — Beckoning Beacons is a highlight of any visit to the museum.
