Life on the Carferries

A rare and intimate visual record of a vanishing Great Lakes tradition.

Statistics can tell you how many tons of freight crossed Lake Michigan on the car ferries. But it takes a photographer’s eye to show you what it felt like. The photographs of Erhardt Peters do exactly that — capturing the people, the rhythms, and the small human moments of life aboard the Lake Michigan car ferries with rare intimacy.

Peters worked the boats, knew the crews, and had access to the spaces and moments that no outside observer could have reached. His images document everything from engine rooms to mess decks, from icy decks in winter to crowded passenger areas in summer. Together, they form one of the most complete visual records of Great Lakes car ferry life in existence.
