Fire Station
Discover how timber towns faced the constant threat of fire during Michigan’s lumber era.
No era in Michigan history combined greater wealth with greater danger than the age of lumbering. The same white pine that built fortunes also built fire hazards — whole towns of wooden buildings surrounded by mountains of sawdust and scrap timber. Fighting fire wasn’t just a civic duty; it was a matter of survival.
The Fire Station exhibit explores how Mason County communities organized their first fire departments during the lumber boom, from the crude bucket brigades of the earliest settlements to the hand-drawn and horse-drawn equipment that followed. The artifacts on display tell the story of the brave volunteers who stood between their towns and destruction.
For families with kids, the fire station is often one of the most engaging stops on the Village tour — an instinctively exciting subject with authentic equipment to discover.
