From the lumber era to modern agriculture, this exhibit tells the full arc of Mason County’s history.

Every county has a legacy — the sum of the decisions, industries, and individuals that shaped it. Legacy Hall at the Mason County Research Center brings that legacy into focus for Mason County, Michigan, offering a sweeping narrative that connects the region’s natural resources, economic development, and human stories from the 19th century to the present.

Exhibits explore the industries that defined Mason County: the lumber trade that cleared the forests, the agricultural economy that replaced it, the maritime industries centered on Lake Michigan, and the communities — from Ludington to Scottville to Free Soil — that grew up around them. Key individuals who shaped the county’s history are profiled alongside the broader forces that drove change.

Legacy Hall is the ideal starting point for any deeper exploration of Mason County history — a rich, contextual overview that makes everything else in the Research Center more meaningful.
