Heritage Vault

View the most precious items in the Mason County Historical Society’s collection.

Every historical society has a vault — a place where the rarest, most fragile, and most irreplaceable items in the collection are protected. At the Rose Hawley Archives, the Heritage Vault opens that world to visitors, showcasing the crown jewels of the Mason County Historical Society’s collection alongside the stories of how each piece came to be preserved.

The exhibit is as much about the process of preservation as it is about the artifacts themselves. Visitors learn how archivists care for documents, textiles, photographs, and objects that are often well over a century old — the techniques, the materials, and the judgment calls that determine what survives for future generations.

It’s a rare and illuminating glimpse behind the scenes of historical preservation, and a reminder that the objects in our collective memory require active, ongoing care to survive.
