Pere Marquette Town Hall

Discover how local government and community life operated in Mason County’s pioneer era.

Every community needs a gathering place — somewhere to debate, decide, and come together. For the residents of Pere Marquette Township, that place was the Town Hall, built in 1879 and in active use for nearly a century.

When a new brick town hall was constructed in 1973, the original wooden structure was saved from demolition and relocated to Historic White Pine Village, where it stands today as a well-preserved example of late 19th-century civic architecture. Its modest but purposeful design reflects the pragmatic spirit of Mason County’s early settlers.

Inside, visitors can connect with the rhythms of township governance, community meetings, and local decision-making that shaped everything from road construction to school funding in pioneer-era Michigan.
