Trapper’s Cabin

Explore this original log cabin, the oldest authorized post office in Mason County’s history.

Long before rural mail carriers and roadside mailboxes, Mason County’s first settlers had one place to send and receive word from the outside world — a modest log cabin that doubled as a home and post office.

Built as early as 1850, the Trapper’s Cabin holds the distinction of being the first authorized post office in Mason County. It’s one of the oldest surviving structures in the region and one of the most authentic in the Village. The combination of dwelling and mail distribution point was typical of Michigan’s earliest frontier settlements, where every building had to earn its keep.

Walking through its low doorway, you get a genuine sense of the isolation and resourcefulness of Mason County’s founding generation — and an appreciation for how even a small building could play an outsized role in connecting a community to the wider world.
