Blacksmith Shop
Discover the work of Blacksmithing in this 19th-century ironwork.
Before hardware stores and standardized parts, every community needed a blacksmith. The blacksmith shop was where iron was bent to the community’s will; horseshoes, tools, wagon parts, hinges, and hardware all came from the forge. Without a skilled smith, a pioneer settlement couldn’t function.
The Blacksmith Shop at Historic White Pine Village is a reproduction of the original Custer Blacksmith Shop, outfitted with authentic equipment drawn primarily from two sources: the shop of the late Abe Nelson, the legendary Mason County lumberjack and blacksmith, and a historic shop from nearby Pentwater. The result is a working exhibit that captures the sights, smells, and atmosphere of 19th-century ironcraft.
On event days, the ring of the hammer on the anvil fills the air with a sound familiar to every Mason County pioneer, a reminder that skilled trades were the backbone of community life.
