Township Mural

Discover the county’s connection to the Civil War and the landscapes that define this corner of Michigan.

Mason County is 15 townships — each one a distinct landscape of fields, pine forests, and sandy beaches; each one with its own character, history, and contribution to the broader story of the county. The Township Mural brings them all together in a single, visually striking exhibit that invites visitors to explore Mason County as both a physical place and a human community.

Beyond geography, the mural draws out a fascinating and often overlooked thread: Mason County’s connection to the Civil War. As visitors move through the 15 townships, they discover the men who left these communities to serve in one of the defining conflicts of American history — and the way that service shaped the communities they returned to, or didn’t.

It’s an exhibit that works on multiple levels: beautiful as a visual survey of the county’s landscape, and deeply informative as a portrait of its history.
